Above is a colour photo of a painting of Abraham Mitchell from the book, "Bradford: A Centenary City", published by the Bradford  Metropolitan City Council in 1997 to mark Bradford's 100 years as a  city.

The accompanying text reads:

"Cartwright Hall (another famous Bradford landmark and museum) houses Bradford's interesting collection of works of art, many of which reflect the city's history.   "The Connoisseur", painted in 1887 by Henry La Thangue, is a fascinating study of a rich woollen manufacturer at home with his family. The subject is Abraham Mitchell who, in common with many of his fellow mill owners, collected pictures. Their taste in traditional modern British and French works reflected their non-conformism and lack of classical education.

"Mitchell had his own private art gallery built on to his mansion, Bowling Park in Rooley Lane.

"The painting shows him studying an acquisition while the rest of the family wait in the background to take afternoon tea. His son, Tom, who became a painter, has just entered the room.

"When the site of Bowling Park and the adjacent Birchlands, the former home of Mitchell's brother Joseph, were sold in the early 1990s the two mansions were demolished and shipped to Japan to be re-erected as golf club houses.
